Fears in preschoolers.

Everyone knows that many children are afraid of something. One scared to stay in a dark room, others do not dare to go on the slide, others run away in horror from the dog, freeze with fear at the sight of bees. Some fear the characters of fairy tales: Baba Yaga, the wolf, the evil sorcerer, other images created by the imagination (“the man with the bag”, a chimney sweep, etc.).

The objects of children’s fears are extremely diverse, and their features are directly dependent on the life experiences of the child, the degree of development of his imagination and such qualities of his personality, such as emotional sensitivity, a tendency to anxiety, anxiety, insecurities, etc. The presence of fear in preschool children in itself is not, as a rule, any pathology, is usually age-related, transient in nature, but at the same time indicates a certain distress in the emotional – personal sphere of the child. Such fears arise from emotional children in different periods of childhood, have their own characteristics. We will discuss the most common fears in children.

In – the first years of life the child is in close physical and emotional connection with the mother, depending on her. The feeling of love and security largely determines the welfare of the baby, is a condition of emotional comfort. In 6-7 months the baby begins to worry if his mother suddenly leaves, with distrust responds to unfamiliar adults. As the child grows, the lack of heat from the mother felt more acute, and at an early age 1.5—2 years — can often be the cause of fear. If the mother behaves towards the child too restrained, rarely takes him in his arms, little caresses, strictly talking to him or pays insufficient attention to him, the child’s behaviour is changing. His anxiety increases, he becomes tearful, difficulty falling asleep and poor sleep, often waking up in tears. During the day he tries to be closer to his mother, worried even when it is a moment out of the room, and if she closes the door, starts to cry. “He’s afraid to be alone,” say the parents. This is true only partly. At an early age the mechanism of occurrence of this fear is determined by the intolerance of even a short separation from the mother is sensitive, emotional kid. If the room instead of the mother will return a different person — a neighbor, a doctor, a distant relative, the child will cry, it is not comfort that now he’s not alone.

Another factor determining the emergence of fears of children of early age is unreasonably strict parents and inadequate means of upbringing that they use. To the Arsenal of these funds, is not suitable for young children, especially troubled, sensitive, emotionally disturbed, are severe penalties, threats, corporal punishment, slaps and blows on his hands, especially on the head or face. Extremely adverse impact on the psyche of the child such punishments, when it locked up alone in a dark small room, the pantry, closet or artificially limit of its movement, forced to lie still or even tied him to the bed. A large number, prohibitions, lack of warmth, affection, emotional closeness with the mother, neglect or unjustifiably harsh punishment from his father lead to a prolonged overvoltage nervous system of the child, which weakens it, creating a fertile ground for the emergence of fears.

With the development of imagination, children begin to be afraid of fabulous creatures — primarily the wolf, then Baba Yaga, Barmaley etc. which symbolizes all evil and danger. Observations have shown that frequent punishment, threats associated with physical pain, such as: “Here don’t behave, daddy will come and spank”, “will Call the doctors let you a hundred shots will do”, etc.— most often lead to the baby’s fear of the wolf, and strict or indifferent attitude of the mother provokes fear of Baba – Yaga.) Children who have these fears originate, are not aware of their causes, they are generally not able to reason and are overwhelmed with fear and helplessness. Acute emotional discomfort and developing imagination to three years lead to the appearance of a whole group of persistent and quite typical fear. Fear of the wolf and the Baba-Yaga is complemented by a fear of many other mythical monsters. Children become afraid of the darkness in which can hide these monsters, empty rooms, large drawers or open cabinets, of which “can someone get out”. The most pronounced fear of the dark in 3 years when this darkness is filled with images generated by the imagination of the child. At the same time missing the life experience of the baby and excessive emotionality not allow him soberly to judge and to understand that there is nothing to fear.

From 3 to 5-6 years old children’s fears are of the most varied and peculiar in varying degrees, the majority of children. Not all they are expressed so that forced to become alarmed parents. In many cases they are of age, of a transient nature. However, in some children they do not disappear, not adjusted, but become Intrusive forms close to neurotic conditions. Unfortunately, at this stage, parents pay attention to them and actively fighting them. Of course, the usual “age” fears typical of preschoolers, also need careful correction by adults.

Normal fears, so often found in children 3-6 years old, based on the already described three-component basis (high emotionality, small life experience and imagination), readily appear, and often disappear by themselves within 3-4 weeks. Often the immediate cause of such fears are ill-considered actions of the adults.

Recommendations to parents.

It is important to relate to children’s fears calmly.

Listen to your child. Even this would bring him some comfort.

Let your child choose a toy – friend with whom he could go to bed, take in kindergarten when he’s sad, etc.

Well helps to overcome children’s fear of art therapy. Ask your child to draw your fear (wolf, do’er, Goblin, etc.), artistic ability of the child here does not matter, because the kid knows what strange circles is he Baba Yaga drew, and the circles and sticks is an evil dog. You can offer to paint the contours of a cast, babajki, etc. Can be offered to blind the monster. After the child depicted in any way your own, you need to offer your baby alone to crumple, servati your figure of fear and as far as you can throw it away, better if you walk with the child outside to the trash cans. After returning home, praise baby: ‘he’s got great dealt with the do’er her crumpled and tore ran into the street. Explain that she is now very afraid and would not come to him.

For children under 3 years get your pencils and pens in black, because black color simultaneously attracts and is very scary baby.

Be attentive to the fears of their child because they don’t appear out of nowhere, they always precedes.
